  1. This poem is about her big brother and how, even though he has done some bad things, she still misses him and the person he used to be. There is a rhetorical shift from the third stanza to the fourth where the diction and imagery and all over tone and mood of the poem goes from negative to poistive. The first part has harsh dition such as "beer", "smoked dope & shot heroin & went to prison", "robbed", and "alone", while the second part uses lighter more joyful diction such as "swing", "dizzy", "laugh & laugh", and "tickle". The repetition of the word "sure" shows how she is uncertain of the person her brother is now but that doesn't change the fact that she misses the person she knew him as when they were younger.

  2. This poem tells the story of a sister who has been put through a lot because of her brother's mistakes. The fact that the speaker lists off the things using an & symbol show that the structure is very immature, showing how she still accepted him doing this at such a young age because she didn't know any better. She said he used to "drink Robitussin wash it down with beer smoked dope", all to portray how she is now aware of what exactly he had experienced. When the speaker says "& sure he used to leave his two year old son alone", shows how her brother has more problems than just his drug abuse. The last stanza proposes a shift in imagery, showing her nostalgia of remembering when her brother used to be there for her, high or not. The audience doesn't exactly know if the speaker was just too young to realize what was happening in this picture, but still it could have. The tone is very nostalgic and somber.

  3. I'd say the direct meaning of the song is about a girl who really misses her brother. There's this sentemental quality to it seen in the diction. It's some nostalgia going on, which we can see in the light-hearted diction at the end with words like "laugh" and "tickle." The word "sure" at the beginning implies done of the criminal activity matters because of who her brother was. This poem highlights how every dark cloud has its silver meaning and there's always some good, specifically in the innocent times of childhood.
